Volleyball Wins Hard-Fought Match With Eastern Washington to Sweep Series

CEDAR CITY, Utah - The Southern Utah volleyball team beat Eastern Washington 3-2 (17-25, 25-16, 17-25, 26-24, 15-9) Saturday night, to sweep the series and head into the Big Sky Conference Championship Tournament on a four-game winning streak.

The win moves the Thunderbirds to 8-7 overall and 8-6 in Big Sky play. Their 8-6 conference record marks the first time that they will finish the season with a winning conference record since they joined the Big Sky in 2012.

They have also locked in the first non-losing overall record since the 2015 season when they finished 15-15.

Stacey Hone led the Thunderbirds with 15 kills and a .323 hitting percentage. Andreanna McKee had 13 kills.

Sarah Gasper had a season-high 31 digs and Corrin Peterson had a season-high 47 assists. Mckenzie Dowell matched her career-high with seven blocks.

The Thunderbirds struggled to score in the first set as the Eagles closed out the win on a 9-3 scoring run, but came out in the second set looking like a different team. They were able to tie the match with an 8-3 run of their own to close out the second set.

The Eagles would win the third set, but then a very-tightly contested third set would go to the Thunderbirds after they opened it on a 8-1 run.

The T-Birds dominated the fifth set, winning handily 15-9 to take the match.

Southern Utah will await the results of the rest of the matches in the Big Sky before they find out what seed they will be in the tournament. The tournament will start on March 31st in Greeley, Colorado.
