Kate Schirmer Secures the Win In Overtime Against Idaho State to Close Out the 2021 Spring Season

CEDAR CITY, Utah -- With a win over Idaho State the Thunderbirds finish the season with an overall record 5-3-1. This is the best record that the T-Birds have achieved in over 10 years back in the 2007 season when they finished 7-6-5. The victory also grants Southern Utah women's soccer with the highest winning percentage in program history (.611).

The Bengals would get on the scoreboard in the 21st minute,as they would make some adjustments in applying more pressure at the beginning of the contest.

The Thunderbirds would enter halftime trailing 1-0 to Idaho State.

Head coach Kai Edwards would switch a few things up.  "Moving Jaylynn Barton to center back and spreading our wings wide to run hard at them everytime."

This adjustment would prove to be successful when Kate Schirmer connected with the back of the net in the 47th minute of the match and evening the score 1-1. Rachael Hunt would be credited with the assist on Schirmer's goal.

With the score tied a classic overtime period would start and the Thunderbirds would take control in this period. Not allowing Idaho State to get any shot attempts off.

Attacking the opponent's territory, Southern Utah would get three shot attempts. Ending the match in the 98th minute would be Schimer as she would once again connect with the back of the net.

Southern Utah's Women's Soccer team broke the highest season scoring average of 2.44 and broke the fewest goals allowed in a season, with only nine goals.

Schirmer finished the season with eight goals and 18 points, tying the single season record for goals and finishing second in points.

Jennifer Kovisto finished third all time in single season on goal against average with 1.15.

The Thunderbirds would finish off the season holding on to a four game win streak. The longest win streak in the conference.
