Soccer Drops Heartbreaking Overtime Match to UC San Diego, 2-1

CEDAR CITY, Utah – After trailing for almost the entirety of the second half, the Southern Utah University soccer team finally broke through when Hailey Hamataka found Kate Schirmer for a goal in the 86th minute to force overtime. The Thunderbirds could not hang on in the extra period, though, as UC San Diego scored the golden goal in the 94th minute and claimed the 2-1 win.

The loss dropped SUU to 1-3-0 on the year while UCSD improved to 1-2-1.

"We played well today," said head coach Kai Edwards. "We saw some ideas of connecting and building and playing. We created chances, but we need to finish those chances. In our best five to ten minutes stretch of the game, we got a goal. Obviously it was not the final result we wanted, but it was a good day."

Schirmer's goal for SUU snapped a two-match scoreless streak and got the Thunderbirds on the scoreboard for the first time since the season opener. Both Schirmer and Hamataka tallied their first points scored of 2021.

While the T-Birds only managed six total shots to UCSD's 25, they were efficient with their six shots as fifty percent of them were on goal. The Tritons could only manage to put nine of their shots on goal. SUU also played a clean game with only four fouls committed compared to 10 for UC San Diego. Megan Short played a great game in goal for the Thunderbirds and made seven saves.

"I think a game like that leaves a taste in our players' mouths to get back out there," Edwards added. "The key though is how are we going to respond? We have to take care of the things we can control and be better at putting the game away early. Our group is about the process and competing. We are better competitors and soccer players than we were a couple weeks ago."

The Thunderbirds will have another opportunity to take the field when San Jose State comes to town on Friday, September 3. Kickoff is slated for 4:00 p.m. MT and the match will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
