CEDAR CITY, Utah - The Southern Utah volleyball team opened their home schedule Wednesday night against Utah State, falling to the Aggies 1-3 (12-25, 15-25, 25-23, 16-25).
Raegen Ashby and Isabella Saucedo led the Thunderbirds offensively with 10 kills each. Ashby hit .476 with zero errors on 21 attempts and also had one block. Bridget Triplett hit .375 with eight kills. Molly McDermott had 31 assists and Rachel Wieber had 23 digs.
The T-Birds got off to a slow start, scoring just 12 points in the opening set. The Aggies were up 16-5 at one point and rolled on to the 25-12 set one win.
Things got slightly better for the Thunderbirds in set two, but the Aggies continued to rack up the points, taking set two 25-15. However, Southern Utah would score three of the final four points in the set and ride that momentum into set three.
The T-Birds got up early in set three, leading 7-4, before a 6-1 scoring run pushed their lead all the way to six points. The Aggies battled back to within one point, but the Thunderbirds were able to fend off the attack. They built a four-point lead and eventually went on to win the set 25-23.
Utah State came out firing in set four, hitting .567 with zero errors in the entire set. The Thunderbirds couldn't stop the barrage, losing the final set 16-25.
The Thunderbirds will be back on the court on Friday September 17 against Dixie State.
