ABOUT SAN JOSE STATE (1-2-0)

The Spartans dropped their first two contests of the year against Santa Clara and San Francisco before defeating UC Santa Barbara on Sunday. Evan House, Kiana Miyazato and Taylor Phillips lead SJSU with one goal apiece. The Spartans are led by head coach Lauren Hanson.

NOTES AND QUOTES

-The Thunderbirds dropped a heartbreaker in their last outing against UC San Diego. Kate Schirmer scored in the 86th minute to even the game at one apiece, but the Tritons netted the golden goal in the 94th minute to earn a 2-1 victory.

-The matchup with San Jose State will be SUU's second match against a Mountain West this season. Southern Utah dropped a 3-0 decision to UNLV earlier in the year.

-SUU took down Hope International by a score of 1-0 to open the season. Victoria Caucci scored the game-winning goal in the 49th minute on an assist from Evi Anderson.

"We played well today. We saw some ideas of connecting and building and playing. We created chances, but we need to finish those chances. In our best five to ten minutes stretch of the game, we got a goal. Obviously, it was not the final result we wanted, but it was a good day."

-Edwards on his team's efforts against UC San Diego

"We got better today, which is scary, but we got better. By halftime we had nine players in our regular rotation out for whatever reason, and then we looked up and saw four of our freshman players in their third-ever college game doing exactly what was asked of them. I felt it was our best possession of the year. We created chances that we need to finish, but we played better than we did Sunday. There's no moral victories, but we did get better today."

-Edwards after the team's match versus UNLV

"To go on the road and get a shutout win is always good. We did some very good things that we have been working to improve for weeks and that was good to see. We wasted some chances and need to be more clinical in the final third as we go forward. We played in an awesome stadium with loud fans which made for an exciting atmosphere under the lights."

-Edwards on the team's season-opening win
