POCATELLO, Idaho– The Southern Utah University men's and women's track and field teams opened their 2022 indoor seasons at the Idaho State Snake River Open this weekend. Several Thunderbirds set very high marks in their respective events.
Freshman Ajia Hughes won the high jump at the Snake River Open with a 5'9, setting a new indoor school record in the event. Hughes also gave a strong performance in the triple jump finishing second with a 37'5.25 which was good enough to put her in second all-time in school history.
Shante Myrie finished first in the women's 60 meters. Myrie put up a time of 7.77, putting her seventh all-time in the SUU record book. Myrie also walked away with another win in the 200-meter race with a time of 25.92.
Senior Alison Pray showed her dominance in the women's mile, winning the event with a time of 4:46 after altitude adjustments and ranking her second all-time in the event in school history. Pray built off of that performance and ran to a new personal best in the 800 meters while winning the race with a time of 2:16.19.
Madisan DeBos won the 3000 Meters running a new personal record time of 10:11.53. She also finished second in the women's mile, earning another personal best with a time of 5:03.93.
Emma Nwachukwu finished second in the weight throw with a mark of 60'5.1/4". Elizabeth White also had a strong day taking home the women's long jump with a jump of 18'7".
On the men's side, Nate Osterstock led the way by winning the mile with a time of 4:00, putting him third all-time in school history in the event. Osterstock followed up that performance with a second-place finish in the 800 meters with a time of 1:54.69.
Travis Feeny followed close behind finishing second in the mile with a time of 4:16.98. He also earned third place in the 3000-meter race.
Coleman Cragun had a strong day, recording personal bests in both of his events. He ran 8:48.10 to win the 3000 meters and followed up with a 3rd place finish in the mile with a time of 4:18.92.
Freshman Noah Bringhurst walked away with a win in the Men's 60-Meter with a time of 6.89. Dillon Petty also gave a solid performance in the weight throw finishing second with a mark of 52'8.¾".
Competing elsewhere, Jarom Smith placed 3rd with a jump of 6'7" in the high jump at the BYU Invitational, putting him 8th all-time in school history.
Both teams will be in action this weekend as they travel to compete in the Air Force Invitational on Thursday, January 20th, and Friday, January 21st.
