CEDAR CITY, Utah - The Southern Utah University women's golf team will head south to Las Cruces, New Mexico to compete in the 2022 Golf Iconic Classic, hosted by New Mexico State. The first round of play will begin tomorrow (October 3), with a shotgun start scheduled to commence at 8:30 a.m. (MT).
The Golf Iconic Classic will span three days, with golfers playing 18 holes each day and finishing tournament play on Wednesday (October 5).
The Field
In addition to Southern Utah and host school New Mexico State, the 15-team field includes CSU - Bakersfield, Cal Poly, Campbell, Long Beach State, Oral Robets, Pepperdine, San Francisco, South Dakota State, UC - Riverside, UT - Arlington, UTEP, UTRGV, and Texas A&M - Corpus Christi.
The Course
The NMSU Golf Course is a championship 18-hole course that is open to the public year-round. Previously, the course has been voted a Top 25 College Golf Course in the United States and a Top 10 course in the state of New Mexico by Golfer's Choice.
Projected Lineup
Chanikan (Pluem) Yongyuan
Yongyuan had a solid first tournament at the Couer d'Alene Collegiate Invitational, finishing first in the SUU lineup and tying for 38th overall after shooting a 222 (+9) at the event. Yongyuan had an exceptional performance in the 2021 version of this tournament, finishing in a tie for eighth after shooting even par for the event. She will seek to have an even better performance this week and secure her first top-10 finish of the 2022-23 season.
Tsara Ralamboarison
Ralamboarison has had an impressive start to her freshman season, finishing first in the Southern Utah lineup in her collegiate debut and second at the Coeur d'Alene Collegiate Invitational. Ralamboarison has been very consistent over six rounds this season, and the Thunderbirds will need another strong performance from her over the next three days.
Tanyatorn (Excel) Thalangkarn
Thalangkarn had her best round of the season on the opening day of the Coeur d'Alene Collegiate Invitational, carding a solid score of 75 (+3). She ended the tournament third in the SUU lineup and tied for 74th overall, after shooting a combined score of 231 for the tournament. In the 2021 version of this event, Thalangkarn finished tied for 66th after shooting 20-over-par in the tournament.
Anais Guibal
Guibal did not have her strongest performance at the Coeur d'Alene Collegiate Invitational, tying for 91st overall and shooting 237 (+24) over 54 holes of play. Guibal had a strong season-opening tournament, and she will look to return to that form at the Golf Iconic Classic. She finished tied for 74th in the same tournament last season, carding a 236 (+20) over 54 holes of play.
Grace Singpraseuth
The freshman returns to the SUU lineup after not competing at the Coeur d'Alene Collegiate Invitational. Singpraseuth finished with a score of 261 in her first collegiate tournament, and she will seek to improve her play this week and turn in a strong performance in her second tournament of the season.
Individual Competitors
Cornelia Karlsson
Karlsson will be competing as an individual in the event. She finished in a tie for 94th place after shooting 247 (+31) in this same event last season. Karlsson competed as an individual at SUU's season-opening tournament, turning in a score of 255 throughout the 54-hole event.
