CEDAR CITY, Utah. - The Southern Utah women's soccer squad moved its record to 9-3-2 and 4-2-2 in the Western Athletic Conference after an intense scoreless 0-0 draw against California Baptist on Friday, Oct. 21 at the Thunderbird Soccer Field.
"These two teams battled all match. I am glad we competed throughout," SUU head coach Kai Edwards said. "Both keepers stood on their heads at some point. Megan [Short] was flying around and making saves. [CBU's] keeper also was a stud."
Redshirt sophomore Short certainly did stand on her head in net this afternoon, collecting nine total saves with a total of 17 shots coming her way. Short came into this competition ranked fifth in the nation in total save percentage at .890 and that tally will rise after this afternoon.
The first half featured 13 total shots with SUU firing off seven and CBU turning in six. Sophomore Hailey Hamataka led the way for the Thunderbirds with a pair of shots, the first just 1:18 into the match before testing CBU at the 8:14 mark.
Short came up huge in the second half as she faced 11 shots from CBU compared to SUU's six in the final half of the contest. Freshman Sammie Sofonia, who also put a shot on goal at the 34:17 mark in the first half, shouldered the offensive load in the second stanza with four total attempts. At one point, she peppered the goal three times within just two minutes of action.

- With WAC conference tournament seeding implications on the line, the contest certainly proved to be chippy with a combined total of five yellow cards on the day. The Lancers drew three, while the hosting T-Birds picked up a pair of yellows. Additionally, a combined 21 fouls were called with 13 going to the Lancers and eight to the Thunderbirds.
- The teams accumulated 30 total shots during the contest in what proved to be an impressive goalie duel.
- Short collected her sixth shutout of the season.
- SUU improved its school record with eight shutouts in a season. The previous record stood at six in 2007.

The Thunderbirds remain home at the Thunderbird Soccer Field for another WAC tilt against Grand Canyon. The contest begins at 3 p.m. MT on Sunday, Oct. 23.
