EDINBURG, Texas - The Southern Utah University volleyball program wrapped up its season against UTRGV in the Quarterfinals of the Western Athletic Conference tournament tonight, ultimately coming up short in four sets.
The Thunderbirds finish the season with a record of 7-17 overall and 6-8 in Western Athletic Conference play.
Individual Leaders
Makenzie Templeton posted an impressive double-double, racking up 14 kills to go along with 15 digs. Senior Raegen Beeson added 13 kills of her own in her final college game.Â
On the defensive side of the game, Sarah Gasper led the way with a team-high 24 digs. Beeson, Rylee Achtzehn, and Carissa Richie also played sweltering defense, each totaling three blocks.Â
Junior setter Macy Short compiled 34 assists and 17 digs over the four sets.
Match Recap
Beeson came out hot to start the first set, firing off three quick points to tie the score at five apiece. The Vaqueros jumped out to a 16-12 lead midway through the set. The Thunderbirds relied on a pair of kills by Templeton to trim the Vaqueros advantage to only one. UTRGV used a run of their own to stay in front, taking the first set 25-17.
Southern Utah was scorching hot to begin set two. The Thunderbirds found themselves up 8-3 after a barrage of kills by Templeton. The Vaqueros would come back to cut the lead to two (10-8). After this, SUU would score six of the next eight points to take a commanding 16-10 advantage. The Thunderbirds would hold onto this lead. Molly McDermott would win the set 25-18 after a crafty ace, tying the match 1-1.
The Thunderbirds scored three of the first four points in set three. Following this, UTRGV would run ahead, taking a 12-4 lead. Southern Utah didn't fold, rallying back with a 7-2 run to get within three (14-11). The Vaqueros rebounded, seizing the set 25-15.
UTRGV would go on to take the fourth set 25-12, winning the match 3-1.
