Wangsgard Named to WAC All-Freshman Team

CEDAR CITY, Utah - The Western Athletic Conference has announced post season awards for the 2022 Women's Soccer season. Southern Utah Forward Whitney Wangsgard has been named to the WAC All-Freshman Team.

The Redshirt Freshman from Grantsville Utah is the first T-Bird to receive the postseason honor in the WAC conference. It is the first time since 2011 that a player from the Southern Utah team has been selected for an All-Freshman team, the last being Kirsten Anthony.

During what has been a truly historic season for the Thunderbird soccer program Wangsgard and her fellow team members came together to compile the most wins in team history. The Thunderbirds set six school records including:

Most Wins in a Season: 9 (9-6-2, 2022)

Most Consecutive Wins: 5 (2022)

Most Goals in a Game: 10 (2022 vs. Mississippi Valley State, Aug. 19)

Most Goals in a Season: 31 (2022)

Most Shutouts in a Season: 8 (2022)

Highest Season Scoring Average: 1.76 (2022)

Wangsgard, who played just over 1000 minutes for the Thunderbirds this season, scored six goals on the year. Her season high came on the road against Mississippi Valley State when she scored two goals. Along with scoring the second most goals for the team this season Wangsgard added four assists. Wangsgard now has the third most points in a single season and has compiled the fourth most assists in a single season.

Congratulations to Whitney on receiving the prestigious honor and to the entire soccer program on a successful season.
