CEDAR CITY, Utah - The Southern Utah University volleyball team (6-14, 5-6 WAC) came up short against Grand Canyon (13-9, 7-4 WAC), falling in three sets.
The Antelopes jumped out to an 8-4 lead to begin set one. Makenzie Templeton willed the Thunderbirds back into the game with four consecutive kills, cutting the lead to only two (11-9). Southern Utah would briefly take the lead late in the set, going up 21-20 after a kill by Macy Short. The Antelopes responded, however, utilizing a 5-2 run to narrowly take set one 25-23.
The two squads split the first ten points of set two. Following this, the Antelopes scored nine of the next ten points to go up 14-6. Makenzie Templeton recorded six kills over the course of the set, but it wasn't enough to bring the Thunderbirds back. Grand Canyon would seize the set two 25-15.
Grand Canyon stayed hot to open the third set, going up 5-1. Southern Utah would weather the storm, battling back to tie the match at 11-11 after a Carissa Richie kill. The Antelopes would again go on a big run, going up 19-14, but SUU would fight back to get within one point, making the score 19-18. That was the closest the Thunderbirds would get, however. GCU would go on to claim the set 25-20, and the match 3-0.
Many Thunderbirds played great tonight, despite the loss. Makenzie Templeton was electric, racking up 15 kills to go along with nine digs. Raegen Beeson totaled nine kills, while Carissa Richie added six. Macy Short did an excellent job of orchestrating the offense, collecting 28 assists. Sarah Gasper played well defensively, tallying a team-high 23 digs.
With the loss, Southern Utah drops to 5-6 in conference play and 6-14 overall.

The Thunderbirds will take the court one final time at home this season, facing off against California Baptist on Saturday for Senior Day. The match is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. MT.
