BOSTON, Mass.– The Southern Utah University Track and Field program kicked off its 2022 indoor season at the Sharon Colyear Danville Season Opener at Boston University this weekend, and multiple Thunderbirds had several impressive performances.
Payton Riggs lead the way for the Thunderbird men's team earning two top-five finishes in the 800 meters and the mile. Riggs blazed to a third-place finish mile, finishing just five seconds out of first place with a time of 4:11.05. He followed that up by taking fifth place in the 800 with a 1:56.16.
Southern Utah also had multiple runners earn solid finishes in the 5k. Travis Feeny clocked a time of 14:16.4, Isaiah Labra was close behind at 14:23, and Santiago Gaitan walked away at 14:52.8.
On the women's side, Haley Tanne and Madisan DeBos earned two new all-time finishes for SUU in the 5K. Tanne blistered to a time of 16:49 to take 79th place overall, stamping herself into the record books, making her fifth all-time in the 5k for SUU. DeBos turned on the jets and finished 84th place with a 16:55.9 to putting ninth all-time in the event for the Thunderbirds.
UP NEXT
The Thunderbirds will have nearly an entire month off before their next competition when they head to the BYU Cougar Invitational on January 12-14.
