TUCSON, Ariz. - The Southern Utah University softball team was back in action at the Candrea Classic today, dropping a pair of games to No. 2 Alabama and No. 9 Arizona.
The T-Birds started off the afternoon with a difficult matchup against perennial powerhouse Alabama.
After surrendering eight runs in the first inning, the Thunderbirds buckled down on the mound, holding the Crimson Tide to just three runs over the last four innings, losing by a final score of 11-0.
Freshman pitcher Keimon Winston put together a solid performance in relief, throwing 4.2 innings while allowing only seven hits and three runs to one of the strongest teams in the country.
Alabama pitcher Jaala Torrence went the distance for the Tide, surrendering only one hit, a single by Reilly Williams.
In the evening game, the Thunderbirds had a rematch with the host school, Arizona.
The T-Birds had a better performance at the plate tonight, putting together four hits in the game.
Madison Sanders was 1-1 at the plate with a walk, while Reilly Williams went 1-2, extending her hit streak to three consecutive games this season. Unfortunately, the Wildcat offense proved to be too much, as they beat SUU for a second time, 15-0.
Next up, Southern Utah returns to action in the Candrea Classic tomorrow morning with a game against New Mexico set for 10:30 AM MT. The Thunderbirds will close out the tournament in the afternoon against Oregon State at 1 PM MT.
