SUU Drops Home Openers to Northern Colorado

CEDAR CITY, Utah - Southern Utah opened Big Sky softball play with a double header against the Northern Colorado Bears. The Thunderbirds failed to score a run in the first game of Friday's slate as they fell 10-0. The second game also ended via mercy rule with a 10-2 score.

GAME 1

Peyton Goodrich got the nod for the first game at Kathryn Berg Field as she worked 4.1 innings, allowing four runs on four hits with two walks and a strikeout. Capri Franzen took over for Goodrich in the fifth inning, allowing five earned runs to come across.

Giana Carasone and Dream Weaver recorded the only two hits of the game with singles.

Meghan Golden recorded the win for the Bears as she pitched a complete five innings of two hit softball with eight strikeouts.

GAME 2

Southern Utah kept the first two innings of Game 2 close, down by two heading into the third frame. Keimon Winston allowed six runs in the third inning to stretch the score to 8 off of two errors by the Thunderbirds.

Franzen knocked in two runs in the bottom half of the inning to put SUU on the board but that would be the last offense for the T-Birds as UNC added a run in the fourth and fifth innings to end the game with a mercy rule.

Winston went three innings surrendering eight runs, while only four of those were earned. Erin Caviness took the win for Northern Colorado.

Game 3 of the series takes place tomorrow at noon at the Kathryn Berg Field.
