CEDAR CITY, Utah - The Southern Utah University men's basketball team and head coach Todd Simon have announced the signing of Snow College transfer Drake Allen ahead of the 2022-23 season.
"Drake is an outstanding fit for our program," said Simon. "He is a winner and has had great coaches at the high school and junior college level. He has an excellent basketball IQ, an explosive first step, and loves to compete."Â
Allen is a 6 '4'' point guard, who earned NJCAA Second-Team All-American honors for his stellar play in the 2021-22 season. Allen chose Southern Utah over offers from at least 10 other Division I programs.Â
Allen led Snow College to a 26-8 record and an appearance in the NJCAA D1 National Tournament for the first time in over 50 years, where he was recognized as a member of the All-Tournament team. Allen appeared in and started all 34 games, scoring 12.8 points per game on an efficient 53.8 percent shooting from the field. He also tallied a team-high 2.2 steals per game, while dishing out six assists per contest, which ranked top 15 in the country.
A Utah native, Allen was a standout athlete at Westlake High School prior to his time at Snow College.
Allen will have three years of college eligibility remaining and will look to make an immediate impact on an SUU backcourt that lost departing seniors Dre Marin and John Knight III.
Southern Utah continues to build momentum in preparation for the 2022-23 season, where they will attempt to build upon back-to-back 20-win seasons. The Thunderbirds were able to reach the 23-win mark this past season, marking the second-highest win total for a single season in SUU's Division I history, which included three postseason wins in The Basketball Classic.
