CEDAR CITY, Utah – Day two of football fall camp for the Thunderbirds dawned early this morning with a fast-paced practice. Players running from place to place in a hurry to accomplish great things this season. The practice consisted of a variety of individual work and some limited-contact team scrimmaging. This puts a focus on making sure athletes are in the right place at the right time.
Technique and alignment are a big part of early camp as the players begin learning the plays and schemes that will help them have success this season. This part of camp can be extremely difficult for the big guys in the trenches especially those on the defensive side of the ball.
The Thunderbirds have a few returners on defense including Preseason All-Conference defensive end Francis Bemiy, who last year tallied 11 tackles in a single game. Bemiy will look to anchor a defensive line that looks stronger, more explosive and faster than they were last spring.
"The defensive line is coming together as one and guys are starting to understand everything as camp goes on." Said Defensive Ends coach Shawn Magginson. He went on the say "I am excited to see how this defensive line continues to get better throughout this season. There is something special in this group as long as they continue to work hard and trust the process".
Interior Defensive Line coach Ryan Hunt said of this group "They are a bunch of hungry guys that are working really hard at marrying the scheme and techniques together". This group will look to carry on a tradition of high quality defensive line play at SUU. "They bring a bunch of energy and enthusiasm to the defense" said Hunt.
The first test for this group will come when University of St. Thomas comes to Cedar City on September 1st. The Tommies return an experienced offensive line as well as a few quick running backs. With the work that this T-bird defensive line has put in they will surely be a force to be reckoned with this season.
