CEDAR CITY, UTAH - The Southern Utah University volleyball team will open the 2022 season this weekend in Ogden, Utah at the Weber State Tournament. The Thunderbirds will play three games in two days against some stellar competition.

The T-Birds will first take the court Friday morning against San Jose State. This will be followed with a match later that evening against the host school Weber State. SUU will play their last game of the tournament on Saturday afternoon, where they will face the University of California Riverside.

Tournament Preview

The Weber State Tournament will give the Thunderbirds plenty of chances to prove themselves against great competition.

Their first opponent, San Jose State, is looking to build upon a successful 2021 campaign which saw them finish with a 19-10 record, earning third place in the Mountain West Conference. Preseason polls predict the Spartans will finish third in the conference again this season. The T-Birds will look to make a statement against them in their first game.

The Thunderbirds next game will see them face the host school Weber State. Defeating the two-time defending Big Sky Conference Champions will be no easy task. The Wildcats are projected to finish second in their conference this year, with aspirations for another Big Sky Conference Championship. The T-Birds are no stranger to the Wildcats, who defeated SUU twice last season. The Thunderbirds aim to avenge those losses.

The tournament will come to a close on Saturday for the T-Birds against the University of California Riverside. UC Riverside struggled last season, but new leadership has the program's future looking bright. Under rookie head coach Nicky Cannon, UC Riverside looks to improve upon their past season and build a winning culture. The Thunderbirds will seek to go out on a high note and end the tournament with a win.

An exciting weekend of SUU Volleyball is coming up this weekend. The tough competition faced throughout this tournament will help prepare the Thunderbirds for the season to come.
