SOUTH BEND, Ind– The Southern Utah University cross country program competed in the Notre Dame Joe Piane Invitational early Friday morning. The Thunderbird men's team finished in 15th place, and the women's team earned 16th, facing a field full of nationally ranked talent.
Men's Recap
SUU's men earned a total of 384 points, finishing in front of Liberty and just behind Eastern Kentucky.
Sophomore Santiago Gaitan started things off strong for the Thunderbirds in the five-mile, cruising to a 31st place finish with a 23:59.7. Isaiah Labra finished second for SUU with a time of 24:09.8 to take 44th place, securing the second top-50 finish of the day.
Coming in next for the Thunderbirds was Travis Feeny, who clocked a time of 24:24.4 to take 71st place. Max Jones and Hayden Harward closed the book for the Thunderbirds. Jones finished in 126th with a 24:53.5, and Harward was right behind with a 24:57.3 to grab 128th place.
Nathan Carlin took 131st place with a time of 25:01.3. Coleman Cragun wasn't far behind in 136th with a time of 25:03.3, and Lanse Larsen earned 148th place finish with a 25:13.1.
The host No.14 ranked Notre Dame took the men's overall win with 81 points, while Tennessee finished second with 104 points.
Women's Recap
The women's team finished with 411 total points, ahead of both Purdue and Navy.
Madisan DeBos led the charge for the Thunderbird women, finishing in 62nd place with a time of 17:11.5. Sariah Hernandez was the Thunderbirds second finisher clocking a time of 17:18.9 to take 72nd place.
Haley Tanne followed by earning 81st place with a 17:23.0, while Jordyn Bartolomucci and Quinn Hagerman rounded out the Thunderbirds top five as Bartolomucci finished in 102nd place with a 17:39.0, and Hagerman took 108th place with a time of 17:44.6.
Aviry Stratton also finished in 115th place with a time of 17:49.3, and Kathyrn Kelly took 153rd with 18:16.2.
The top-ranked team in the nation, NC State, won the meet with just 55 points, while No.3 ranked New Mexico finished in second place with 68 points.
UP NEXT
The Thunderbirds will now head back to Cedar City to prepare for the SUU Color Country Invitational at the Cedar Ridge Golf course on Saturday, October 8th.
