PROVO, Utah – The Southern Utah University track and field program posted a weekend full of several high marks in its opening competition of 2023 at the BYU Cougar Invitational inside Smith Fieldhouse. Thunderbirds Trenton Maurer and Jentry Skidmore led SUU with wins in their respective events.
Women's Team
Southern Utah had several stellar finishes from its jumping athletes. Jentry Skidmore led the way for the women's team with a leap of 19 8 ½ and a first-place finish in the long jump. Ajia Hughes had a special day grabbing top-three finishes in the high jump and triple jump. Hughes took second place in the high jump with a mark of 5 7 ¾ before leaping to a 36 4 ½ and a third place in the triple jump.
In the 4x400 meter, Seadra Hamilton, Secret Mceuen, Jentry Skidmore, and Maya Benjamin blistered to a time of 4:03.64 and a second-place finish, missing out on a first-place finish by just six seconds.
Iana-Michovani Graham and Mceuen each earned top-three finishes in the 60-meter finals. Michovani Graham cruised to second place with a time of 7.692, and Mceuen finished just tenths of a second behind with a 7.695 and third place.
Three Thunderbirds finished inside the top 15 in the 200 meters. Mceuen jetted to seventh place overall with a 25.85, while Maya Benjamin came in just seconds behind in ninth place with a time of 25.96, and Savannah Nielson rounded out the three in 12th place with a 26.15.
Adyson Pace took 8th place in her first race of the season with a 1:00.72.
Throwers Rebecca Hazelet and Kaydee Marshall both earned top-ten finishes. Hazelet took fifth place with a 143 10 ¾ in the discus, and Marshall placed ninth with a 38 10 1/2 in the weight throw.
Men's Team
On the men's side, Maurer fueled the way for the Thunderbird men by vaulting to a sensational height of 15 ¼ to catapult into first place in the pole vault finals.
Four different T-Birds earned top-10 finishes in the 400-meter finals. Dylan Gibson led the way with a third-place time of 49.30. Jaedyn Carpenter followed with a time of 49.98 to take sixth place. Nick Pembroke finished close behind Carpenter in eighth place with a 51.15, while Nelson Douglas took tenth place with a 51.27.
Gibson, Carpenter, Douglas, and Jace Rodgers also soared to second place in the 4x400 finals with a 3:18.12.
Dominick Vasquez and Dillon Petty finished top five in the weight throw. Vasquez took fourth with a 51 5 ¼' and Petty placed fifth with a 51 4 ¼'. Colby Adams closed things out by securing fifth place in the discus with a 147 10'.
Cedar English led the way for the men's jumpers, leaping to a monstrous jump of 24 ½ to clinch third place.
Cameron Beans blistered to fourth place in the 200 meters with a 22.83.
