NACOGDOCHES, Texas -- On Sunday, Oct. 8 the Southern Utah University women's soccer team traveled to Nacogdoches, Texas, to take on the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks in a conference showdown, losing 2-1.
The Thunderbirds wasted no time getting on the board, as in just the first minute redshirt junior Kiki Stewart was fouled and awarded a free kick where she delivered a beautiful ball, which was headed into the goal by junior Laney Kimble, her first goal of the season. This lead would hold the rest of the half with SUU leading 1-0.
But unfortunately for the Thunderbirds, the second half would be all SFA. In the 51st minute, freshman Ava Shannon found junior Jayme Bailey on a cross within the goal box, leading to an open goal for Bailey, making it 1-1.
The Thunderbird's defense tightened up and would keep this game in a tie until the final seconds, when again it was Bailey who on a free kick was able to find the back of the net giving the Lumberjacks the 2-1 win. With the loss, SUU moves to 1-8-5 overall and 1-3-1 in conference play. And with their first conference win, SFA finds themselves at 2-12-1 overall and 1-4-1 in conference play.
Quotes from Kai Edwards
"Absolutely gutted for our team who left it all out on the field. We got the three points we needed on the week. And we are still on the hunt for a top six spot. We are playing some of our best soccer of the year and we will need it against the two other teams looking for a playoff spot."
