CEDAR CITY, Utah. Southern Utah basketball head coaches Todd Simon and Tracy Sanders have ushered in the most successful five years in the history of basketball at the University.
The tandem has blown doors off combined coaching records set since Southern Utah first offered men's and women's basketball in 1975-76 when Kathryn Berg helmed the women's team and Stan Jack entered his fifth year coaching the men's squad.
Simon and Sanders have a chance to break a record they tied last year for most combined wins in school history with 41 total. The only pair to match them are Bill Evans and Joe Hillock in 2000-01 when the men's team went to the NCAA Tournament and finished 25-6 with Hillock's squad finishing 16-12 as well.
Last year, the men went 23-12 with the women putting up an 18-12 mark for 41 combined wins to tie the mark.
The resume is even more astonishing when looking into consistent winning across multiple seasons.
Currently, Simon and Sanders are on a two-year tear with 78 combined wins (2021-present), breaking the record they tied the year prior of 72 wins across two seasons (2020-22). Previously, Joy Peterson and Stan Jack held the record with 72 wins from 1976-78.
Additionally, the combination also owns the most combined wins across three seasons (109; 2020-23), four seasons (144, 2019-23), and five seasons (169, 2018-23).
Note, combined wins below only show tallies where the same person served as the coach of their respective program during the span of the years. Even considering other time periods where 3-4 coaches were at the helm of the men's and women's teams, Simon and Sanders still own each of the records.
