Thunderbirds Drop Doubleheader on the Road

RENO, Nevada – The Southern Utah Softball team dropped a pair of games today on the road at the University of Nevada. In the first game on Sunday, the T-Birds fell 13-0 in five innings. Game two was a much closer matchup with the Wolf Pack coming away with a 2-0 victory.

The Thunderbirds had planned on getting three games in this weekend, but wet Friday weather delayed them twice before canceling them altogether. The decision was made to make the three-game series a Sunday doubleheader instead.

The T-Birds were led at the plate this weekend by freshman third baseman Emily Gonzalez who collected three hits between the two games. Junior outfielder Allie Laub also picked up a pair of hits in the doubleheader, but the Thunderbirds couldn't get the hits needed to drive in a run with runners in scoring position. Other T-Birds who picked up hits this weekend included sophomore Sophia Masut and freshman Riley Nielson

In the circle, sophomore Keimon Winston started the first game but had to be relieved early in the game, remaining on the hook for the loss. In Game two, Freshman Riley Nielson did the pitching, going six strong innings in the effort and only giving up two runs. Nielsen only allowed the potent Wolf Pack offense to earn six hits in the complete game.

NEXT UP

The Thunderbirds will open the WAC season next Friday and Saturday against the University of Texas at Arlington. The games are scheduled to be played here in Cedar City but that may change due to weather and field conditions. The three-game series will include two games Friday beginning at 1:00 PM MT and a single game on Saturday at noon MT.
