CEDAR CITY, Utah – The Southern Utah Softball team fell in the first two games of the California Baptist series Tuesday afternoon. The Thunderbirds dropped game one 5-3 and game two 4-10.
Southern Utah was led at the plate in the games by sophomore second baseman Jayne Sepulveda who collected four hits on the day. Sepulveda also came around to score twice. Outfielders Allie Laub and Sophia Masut each added two hits of their own in the contests. Junior Capri Franzen smashed a huge three-run home run in game two to put the Thunderbirds out front but the relentless offense from California Baptist kept putting the pressure on.
In the circle, the Thunderbirds used a few different pitchers giving Sophomore Keimon Winston a chance to work through five innings picking up four strikeouts. Freshman Riley Nielson got the loss in game one after pitching 3.1 innings and allowing 5 runs. Redshirt senior Payton Goodrich pitched well in relief in both games.
