CEDAR CITY, Utah - Southern Utah Athletics hosted its second annual Birdys Award ceremony Tuesday evening. The black-tie event was packed with outstanding student-athletes, coaches, and staff who showed up to celebrate some of the amazing accomplishments of the 2022-23 season. 

Kicking off the event was Birdys host and Professor of the Year award recipient Dr. Hayden Coombs. Coombs said of the event, "It's an honor to be involved with this event every year. I cherish every opportunity to recognize our students, and our student-athletes are no different. So many of them make such a positive impact on our campus community, so it's fun to be able to recognize them for the stuff they do off the court or field."

The event featured a highlight reel of some of the most impactful clips from this year. Included in the reel was the award-winning "Moment of the Year". The buzzer-beating shot by senior Cherita Daugherty helped keep the Southern Utah Women's Basketball season alive and will go down as one of the greatest moments in the history of SUU Athletics.  

The Thunderbird Men's Basketball team was awarded the Male Team of the Year for its successful campaign. The Women's Basketball Team was honored as well receiving the Female Team of the Year for accomplishing the first-ever WAC Championship in program history.
