OMAHA, NE -- SUU soccer lost 4-0 in the 2023 season opener to the reigning Summit League Champions the University of Nebraska, Omaha.
Head Coach Kai Edwards said this about the opener:
"We lost to a really good soccer team tonight. They won their league for a reason, they capitalized on our mistakes and we were missing a few details. We competed hard and stayed together as a group which is a great positive. We go again on Saturday and will be better."
The Mavericks opened the scoring early with a header by Cece Behrens in the second minute of the game. The rest of the first half was back and forth with both teams having quality scoring opportunities. Whitney Gardner led the Thunderbirds with three shots and one shot on goal.
Starting the second half the Thunderbirds had the first two shot attempts and forced a corner kick but just couldn't find the back of the net. The Mavericks came right back and Sophia Green made it 2-0 in the 51'. Emilie Erland and Alyssa Keller had the final two goals of the night in the 76' and 83'.
Defender Aubrey Murray was the only Thunderbird to play all 90 minutes with goalkeeper Julia Ortega right behind her at 80 minutes. Skylar Cano and Jenna Grider joined Gardner with one shot on goal each.
The Thunderbirds are right back in action on Saturday, Aug 19 when they take on the University of South Dakota at 5 p.m. MT.
