On Friday, Sept. 5, the Southern Utah University women's soccer team traveled to St. George to open conference play against the Utah Tech Trailblazers, earning a 1-1 draw in the contest.
Both teams held each other scoreless until the 24th minute, when Utah Tech sophomore Lacy Fox was able to connect on a goal, with the assist coming from senior Brynlee Rider.
The score would remain this way until the 76th minute when Thunderbird senior Ashley Rivera scored the equalizer off of an assist from sophomore Sammie Sofonia.
After this, both teams entered a defensive gridlock, with neither team being able to score for the remainder of the game. The match ended in a 1-1 draw moving the Thunderbirds' record to 0-0-1 in conference play and 0-5-5 overall.
Quotes From Kai Edwards
"Great fight and character to come back versus a WAC tournament team a year ago. We saw an ultimate team performance today. Ashley (Rivera) in her last game ever in her hometown of St. George scored a beauty from an unselfish pass from Sammie (Sofonia).
All the backs and holding mids locked in in the 2nd half versus an explosive attack. We will enjoy this point and get ready for next weekend. Sitting at 0-0-1 in league play and a week to prepare for a very good set of teams coming into town."
