CEDAR CITY, Utah - There may still be snow on the field, but softball season is inching closer every day. As the Southern Utah University Softball team prepares for the season, let's spotlight a group of exceptional outfielders poised to make a significant impact on the field.
Coach Don Don Williams Said
"Our outfield is much improved, and we have depth in our roster. We have added speed and strength to our outfield this year, which will give us the ability to track down balls for some crucial outs. The athleticism in our outfield is going to give us the ability to put a damper on opposing offenses."
Returning Talent
Alayah Toscano - Toscano, a seasoned player who started last year, brings back a wealth of experience to the Thunderbird outfield. She was second on the team with six doubles, and her defensive skill is undeniable. Boasting a strong arm, Toscano is undoubtedly a frontrunner for starting in centerfield, making her a key player to watch throughout the season.

Sophia Masut - Last season's left fielder, Sophia Masut, is on a mission to solidify her spot in the starting lineup. Masut played in 37 games last season for the Thunderbirds. Known for her exceptional defensive skills (.942 Fielding %), Masut's determination to claim a prominent role on the team is evident. As she competes for a starting position, the coaching staff anticipates her continued growth as a valuable asset in left field. Her speed and softball IQ are among the best on the team.Â
Capri Franzen - Returning player Capri Franzen is looking to contribute in any way possible. Franzen often served as the designated player last season, focusing on offensive firepower. Franzen hit .358 last season, adding four big-time home runs. Her experience and offensive capabilities will earn her time in the lineup this season.Â
Addition by Transfer:
Laurie Cooke - A super-fast utility player, has transitioned from shortstop to the outfield during fall ball. Capable of seamlessly playing both left field and shortstop, Cooke's versatility is a valuable asset. Her dedication to improvement is evident, and the early pre-season tournaments will provide a clearer picture of her potential impact for the T-Birds this year. Â
Who's On Deck: The Freshman Journey
Taralyn Ollison - A freshman with lightning speed, Taralyn Ollison covers ground with remarkable agility. Coaches recruited her for her raw talent and athletic ability. Her background in a successful club program indicates a winning mentality that could prove invaluable to the team.
Belle Freund - Belle Freund, a dynamic utility player with a powerful arm, is making waves in the outfield. Typically seen in middle infield, Freund's versatility is being explored in right field. With a strong glove, impressive speed, and a capable bat, the freshman is set to prove herself and secure a spot in the highly competitive outfield.
