Coach Eric Houle Said
"Out of nine regions in the country, the Mountain Region is always one of the top two competitive regions. It's the process we follow to get to the national championship. Our women will gain valuable experience, and our men will have a shot at qualifying for the next level."
Last Time Out
The Thunderbirds enter the upcoming race after a strong Western Athletic Conference Championship performance, with the men taking second and the women taking third.
The men's team landed four runners in the top ten finishers, with Santiago Gaitan's 23:16.3 8K placing him second. Madisan DeBos and Jordyn Bartolomucci led the way on the women's side, finishing 13th and 14th with times of 20:55.8 and 21:07.8 respectively.
Mountain Regionals
The mountain regional will boast some of the most talented cross country rosters in the nation on both the men's and women's sides, including Brigham Young University, ranked No. 1 across both genders, and Northern Arizona University, whose women rank No. 4 and men rank No. 8.
To continue to the next level, Southern Utah must perform to the best of their capability, as only the top two teams in each regional secure an automatic bid to nationals. If a team doesn't secure an automatic bid, a strong showing at regionals can still land them a spot if the NCAA DI Cross Country Subcommittee selects it as one of the 13 at-large teams.
Individually, the first four regional finishers not from an automatic qualifying or at-large team will also secure their path to nationals.
Hosted by the University of Nevada, Reno, the championships will be held at Washoe Golf Course on Friday, Nov. 15, 2024. The women's 6K race begins at 12 p.m., with the men's 10K following at 1 p.m.
