Uhrich Shines in Thunderbirds’ 50-Point Win Over Buccaneers

CEDAR CITY, Utah - The Southern Utah University women's basketball team poured it on, scoring a season-high in points against the Park University Gilbert Buccaneers to take their second win of the season on Dec. 20 in a 92-42 rout. The game earns Southern Utah their second home win of the season, while Park University Gilbert drops to 6-5.


Top T-Birds

  • Ava Uhrich recorded her first double-double of the season, raining down 28 points, on 80% shooting from the field. Her ten rebounds were accompanied by two blocks and four assists.

  • Off the bench, Lexi Bull recorded a double-double of her own, racking up 12 boards and ten points.

  • The Thunderbirds combined for a season-high 57 rebounds, 26 assists and 13 steals.

Game Recap

First Half

Southern Utah started the first quarter with a short-ranged attack focused on using their height advantage, with Ashley Banks and Uhrich each scoring four in the opening minutes. With the quarter drawing to an end, the Thunderbirds started humming from the perimeter, with Daylani Ballena and Samantha Johnston both sinking threes to put the team up 22-12.

Uhrich continued her strong performance in the second, piling up 14 points by the end of the half. Maria Garcia drained a three for her first points of the year, while Bella Hasan scored the first points of her collegiate career, contributing to a 20-point lead heading into halftime.

Second Half

Southern Utah continued their strong three-point performance in the third, with five different Thunderbirds cashing in from deep. The frenzy of baskets extended SUU's lead to 41 in a 77-36 game.

Pouring on a final seven points in the fourth quarter, Uhrich never took her foot off the gas. Holding the Buccaneers to a season-low 42 points through four quarters, the Thunderbirds opened their lead to 50 to close out the win.
