OREM, Utah - The Southern Utah University men's and women's cross country teams opened their season with a strong performance Friday, Aug. 30 in the Utah Valley University Invitational at Scera Park. In the three-mile race, the women finished fourth and the men finished second.
Coach Eric Houle said:
"It was an excellent opening meet for us. I hope that sitting out a few of our athletes so they can do more training will help us improve even more throughout the season."
Men's Recap
Totaling 48 points, the Thunderbirds finished in second place, behind only the hosting Wolverines.
Heading up the pack, Nathan Carlin finished fourth with a time of 14:29.9. Coleman Cragun followed close behind with a time of 14:34.0, earning him eighth place. Jacob Peterson and Logan Peele also breached the top 20, taking 11th and 14th respectively with times of 14:40.2 and 14:41.4. Rounding out Southern Utah's scorers, Lanse Larsen took 21st with a time of 14:51.7.Â
Max Jones took 30th with a 14:59.8 and freshman James Butterfield ran a 15:06.2 in his first race as a T-Bird, ranking 34th among his new collegiate competitors.
Women's Recap
The women's team finished fourth with 113 points, narrowly edging out Idaho State's 116 score.
Finishing in seventh place, Madisan DeBos led Southern Utah with a time of 17:01.9. Isabella Evans ran a 17:44.9 to take 24th, and freshman Audrey Hales finished her first race in 34th with a time of 17:56.5. Makayla Pitcher's 18:10.3 race earned her 41st place, and Quinn Hagerman's 18:28.5 made her 56th.
Closing out the competition for the Thunderbirds, Lia Selander took 73rd with a time of 18:47.9, and freshman Adisen Stratton took 77th with a 18:53.4.
