CEDAR CITY, UTAH -- The Thunderbirds picked up their first win of the season in dominant fashion over Mountain West opponent Colorado College—the first win over a Mountain West opponent since 2018.
Head Coach Kai Edwards said
"We competed hard together as a team today. Shutouts are awesome. Today was about the team competing."
Game Recap
Both teams had many chances in the first half, with SUU taking five shots and CC taking four, but some quality saves by both goalkeepers led to a 0-0 tie at halftime. Â
The second half was all Thunderbirds. The duo of Whitney Gardner and Sarah Assumma struck twice just five minutes apart. The first came in the 51st minute. Gardner made an unbelievable play to free herself up, slid a through-ball past the last defender, and Assumma finished the goal.Â
Yui Fujii added her name to the stat sheet on the second goal, passing the ball to Gardner, who again found Assumma cutting behind the defense and finishing her second goal of the evening.Â
The Thunderbird's defense was also stout in the second half, allowing just two shots.Â
The two assists have moved Garder into a tie for fifth in SUU's history in total points with 37. She is also now just one assist away from being tied in career assists.Â
Statistical Recap
The Thunderbirds once again outshot their opponent, doubling up the Tigers with 12 shots to their six.Â
Steph Roper led the team with four total shots, including two on goal.Â
Adelayo Oguntade, Jenna Grider, and Aubrey Murray all played the full 90 minutes and were vital in SUU's first shutout of the season.
Darya Mosallaei had three saves on six shots faced.Â
