SUU to Start Road Trip at Eastern Washington

CEDAR CITY, Utah - The Southern Utah women's basketball team will face off against Eastern Washington on the road in Cheney, Wash., on Thursday, Nov. 13 at 7:00 p.m. The game will mark the first battle of a two-game road trip against future Big Sky Conference foes.


Head Coach Tracy Mason Said

"We're excited for our first road test of the season. We'll face two really tough teams in Eastern Washington and Idaho. I'm proud of our performance last Saturday, and we need to continue our momentum and focus as we hit the road. Our team is so competitive, and I know they'll be ready to play against two future Big Sky opponents."

Matchup History

  • Southern Utah holds a 7-14 all-time record against Eastern Washington, having won four of its last six against the Eagles. In their last matchup during the 2023-2024 season, now-junior Ava Uhrich initiated her freshman breakout, totalling 16 off-the-bench points and missing only one shot on the night.


The Thunderbirds

Southern Utah has played exceptionally well, posting an inspiring 2-0 start to the season, including an impressive 77-64 upset over Washington State. The Thunderbirds average an outstanding 90 points per game while holding opponents to only 59.5.

They flaunt fantastic three-point accuracy, sinking 41.5% of shots from the perimeter, and they have crashed the boards with great success, bringing down 49 rebounds per contest. A huge factor in SUU's success has been its ability to capitalize on opponents' mistakes, averaging 20 points off turnovers.

Reigning Western Athletic Conference Newcomer and Player of the Week, junior transfer Brooklyn Fely averaged 20.5 points and 12 rebounds in her first week with the Thunderbirds.

Sophomore Sierra Chambers also started the year promisingly, averaging 15.5 points and 4.5 assists. Cementing herself as a defensive anchor, sophomore Kortney Doman averaged eight rebounds per game and fought for a team-high four steals and two blocks between the two home matchups.


Scouting Report

Eastern Washington Eagles

Holding a 1-1 overall record, Eastern Washington will face the Thunderbirds following a 73-58 loss at Arizona State. They average 78.5 points per game and boast a similarly impressive perimeter accuracy to the Thunderbirds, sinking 41.7% from three.

The well-rounded Eagles offense has relied on a triple-threat attack to start the season, with freshman Elyn Bowers, sophomore Kourtney Grossman, and senior Ella Gallatin each rounding up over 13 points per game. 

Grossman and Gallatin have also made their presence known in the post, averaging 8.5 and seven rebounds, respectively.
