Matchup History
- Southern Utah holds a 4-1 all-time record against Cal Poly, having dropped last year's game 66-58. In the matchup, current sophomore Kortney Doman logged her freshman breakout, racking up four steals and shooting 71.4% from the field for 13 points.
The Thunderbirds
Despite returning only one of last year's five starters, the Thunderbirds are off to their most successful start since the 2019-2020 season. The infusion of young blood and new talent in the offseason served as a catalyst for Head Coach Tracy Mason's program, which burst out to a 4-1 record.
Southern Utah's impressive offense averages 83.4 points, but its defense has been rockier than years past, allowing 66.2 points per game. Sinking 39.4% of their shots from three, they've proven accurate on the perimeter. However, SUU's greatest advantage has been under the glass.
Even after a quiet game under the hoop last week, Southern Utah brings down a strong 47 boards per contest, which grants them a 13.2 margin over their opponents. The Thunderbirds average 16 offensive rebounds per game, making second-chance points a huge factor for SUU.
Reigning Western Athletic Conference Player of the Week Sierra Chambers leads the Thunderbirds in scoring, averaging 15.8 points and 3.8 assists per game.
Three Thunderbirds, junior Brooklyn Fely, sophomore Kortney Doman, and junior Ava Uhrich, average more than eight rebounds across the five games this season, combining for a daunting presence under the hoop on both ends of the court.
Scouting Report
Cal Poly Mustangs
The 1-3 Mustangs will look to recover from a tumultuous road trip in which they dropped games to Stanford, Seattle University, and Eastern Washington. Their matchup with Southern Utah will open a three-game homestand that offers them a chance to get back on track.
Cal Poly has yet to surpass 75 points in a Division I game and has allowed an average of 81 points per game to DI opponents. However, the Mustangs have been very good at taking advantage of mistakes, tallying 19.5 points off turnovers per game.
The clear focal point of Cal Poly's team, sophomore Vanessa McManus, racks up an incredible 23 points per game and leads the team in rebounding.Â
Freshman Charish Thompson acts as a great complement to McManus, averaging 15.8 points of her own. With 26 free-throw attempts on the young season, Thompson has yet to miss from the charity stripe.
