Matchup History
- Southern Utah holds a 5-5 all-time record against NM State, and the last time the two teams faced off, they were each vying for a spot in the Western Athletic Conference Semifinals. In the second half, the Thunderbirds made an incredible 16-point comeback before Cherita Daugherty heaved one of the most dazzling buzzer beaters in SUU history for a 62-61 triumph.
The Thunderbirds
After breaking the program record for three-pointers in a game during their 111-41 rout of the Nelson Warriors on Nov. 29, the Thunderbirds are off to a scorching 6-1 start.
Southern Utah's fantastic opening month has launched them onto the national leaderboards. SUU ranks seventh in the nation for made free throws with 19 per game, thanks in large part to sophomore Sierra Chambers, who has drained her last 21 free-throw attempts.Â
The Thunderbirds post an outstanding 47.1 rebounds per game, which places them ninth in the country. Leading this effort, juniors Ava Uhrich and Brooklyn Fely have crashed the boards with great success, each averaging more than eight rebounds per game.
In addition, the potent Southern Utah offense ranks 12th nationally in scoring, averaging 87.6 points per game. Chambers captains this impressive scoring attack, averaging a team-high 14.7 points and 3.7 assists.Â
Junior Morgan Trigueiro has proven herself to be one of Southern Utah's several impressive perimeter threats, hitting on 52.2% of her 23 triples. Meanwhile, freshman standout Devyn Kiernan leads the team with 13 made three-pointers.
Scouting Report
NM State Aggies
Coming off back-to-back losses in the Big Easy Classic, the 1-5 NM State Aggies are off to a rocky start to the season.
NM State's struggles have come on both sides of the ball, with the team allowing 69.7 points per game defensively and scoring only 51.7. Ball security has also been an issue for the Aggies, with the team averaging 25.8 turnovers per game.
Despite not having found their groove as a team, NM State flaunts some talented individual performers. Senior Lucía Yenes boasts a team-leading 14.7 points and 5.5 rebounds per game. Complementing Yenes, junior Imani Warren leads the team with 10 steals and scores 10 points per game.
