Thunderbirds Struggle in 70-47 Loss to Colorado State

FORT COLLINS, Colo. - The Southern Utah women's basketball team struggled to find a rhythm in its 70-47 loss to Colorado State on Sunday, Dec. 7. The Thunderbirds fall to 7-2 after taking their second road loss of the season, while the Rams jump to 8-2.

Head Coach Tracy Mason Said:

"Tough road game for us. CSU is a very talented team. If you make a mistake, they capitalize on that. We made too many mistakes today and missed too many layups. We needed to be more aggressive."

Top T-Birds

  • Junior Brooklyn Fely earned her fourth double-double of the season, scoring 16 points and tying her season-high 14 rebounds.
  • With four more scores from the charity stripe, Sierra Chambers extended her impeccable free throw shooting streak. The sophomore guard has now scored on her last 35 free-throw attempts.
  • The Thunderbirds made five of their eight three-pointers in the first half.

Game Recap

First Half

The Thunderbirds and Rams started the game in a back-and-forth shootout with triples from Fely, junior Ava Uhrich, and freshman Devyn Kiernan knotting the game at 11s. However, Southern Utah allowed a quarter-closing 10-0 Colorado State run that put the Rams up 21-13.

Back-to-back scores from Fely cut the deficit to one in the second quarter, but SUU couldn't hold on as the Rams pulled away to a 37-27 lead at the half.

Second Half

Allowing a 13-0 run to open the half Southern Utah spent much of the third quarter trying to stop the slide. Eight made free throws contributed to a renewed effort by the Thunderbirds, but couldn't prevent Colorado State from maintaining a 57-37 lead with a quarter left.

SUU scored eight unanswered points as the fourth quarter began, but the Rams recovered quickly. Capitalizing on Southern Utah's foul trouble, Colorado State pulled away to a 70-47 win.
