Thunderbirds Fall in Final Game in Phoenix

Southern Utah Softball is Presented by Jennifer Davis ERA Realty

PHOENIX, Arizona — The Thunderbirds fell 13-4 in the final game of the series with Grand Canyon Saturday afternoon. The Thunderbirds fall to 9-22 on the season with a 4-8 record against WAC opponents.

Freshman Michaella Salavtierra led the Thunderbirds at the plate with two hits in the game. Salvatierra also drove in one run in the game. In the circle, the Thunderbirds used four different pitchers in an attempt to slow down the potent GCU offense.

Coach Don Don Williams Said

"GCU has too many tools to make defensive mistakes. We need to get to work this week and prepare to bounce back for our home games against Utah Tech on Friday."

Game Summary

The Thunderbirds took the lead in the top of the second inning when Tawnie Mozeris drove in Kassidy Munoz, making the score 1-0.

The Lopes wasted no time answering, scoring six runs in the bottom half of the second. Grand Canyon added to the lead in the bottom of the third, making the score 8-1.

In the top of the 4th, Southern Utah scored three runs on three hits, aided by two hit-by-pitches and a defensive error.

After Arianna Ramirez flew out, Kassidy Munoz singled, and Amyah Boostedt was hit by a pitch. Following another flyout, freshman Michelle De la Cruz was hit to load the bases.

Freshman Aubrie Burgos delivered an RBI single, and Salvatierra followed with an infield single that, combined with a catcher error, brought home two more runs, bringing the score to 8-4.

The Lopes bounced right back, however, scoring five runs in the bottom of the fourth to make the score 13-4. With solid defense and pitching, they held the Thunderbirds scoreless in the top of the fifth to end the game early.
