Sixth-Inning Surge Not Enough Against Host California Baptist

Southern Utah Softball is Presented by Jennifer Davis ERA Realty

CEDAR CITY, Utah — The Thunderbirds fell in their opening game of the WAC tournament 9-3 to the host from California Baptist. Southern Utah will move into the one-loss bracket tomorrow to try to extend its time in the tournament.

The Thunderbirds were led at the plate by sophomore Taralyn Ollison. Ollison picked up three hits in the game and came around to score once. Senior Amyah Boostedt finished with two hits and an RBI in the game to be a top performer. In the circle, Emily Delgado was tagged with the loss, pitching 6.1 innings and striking out two in the effort.

Coach Don Don Williams Said

"We gave them too many free bases to put ourselves in a position to be successful. We need better performances from all aspects of our game to stay alive in this bracket."

Game Summary

California Baptist struck early in the first inning, capitalizing on a fielding error to plate their first run. A base hit by Soto followed, giving the Lancers an early 2–0 advantage.

Both teams were held scoreless through the middle frames until CBU added another run in the top of the sixth with an RBI single from Alvarez to make it 3–0.

The Thunderbirds came alive in the bottom of the sixth, stringing together four straight hits to mount a rally. Ariyana Miranda and Arianna Ramirez each knocked in a run with singles, and Amyah Boostedt tied the game with an RBI single up the middle, leveling the score at 3–3.

However, the momentum swung back to California Baptist in the top of the seventh. The Lancers erupted for six runs on a series of singles, walks, and a sacrifice fly. The deficit proved too much as the Thunderbirds fell by a final score of 9-3.
