CEDAR CITY, UTAH -- The SUU Women's Soccer team came up short in its 2025 season opener, falling at the University of Montana 3-0.
Head Coach Kai Edwards said
"We didn't defend the set play well in the first-half and that was the difference in the game. The second half we did much better and created very good chances. Time to get ready for a well coached EWU Sunday."
Game Recap
The game began with a frenzied pace, as both teams made mistakes and committed fouls early. One of which led to a free-kick set piece from Aubrie Labno that resulted in a quality chance just 15 minutes into the game.Â
Thunderbirds goalkeeper Jazmyn Brass had a phenomenal effort to keep the game at zero's at about the 20-minute mark, but the high-powered Grizzlies kept attacking. Eventually, a free-kick somehow skipped through all SUU defenders and landed on the foot of Maddie Ditta, and Montana took a 1-0 lead with 20 minutes remaining in the half.
Another bouncing ball off a free-kick resulted in Reagan Brisendine chipping a through ball over the SUU back line, and Chloe Seelhoff found the back of the net to make it two goals to none.
The second half was much cleaner for SUU, recording the first three shot attempts of the half. But again, Montana had an answer, and again it was Seelhoff that slid a shot just under a diving Brass to make it 3-0 for the Grizzlies.
Senior goalkeeper had a phenomenal save on Seelhoff after the Grizzlies were awarded a penalty kick. Brass read the shot perfectly and made a diving save to the low right side of the net.
Despite creating a lot of pressure and quality chances, the Thunderbirds were unable to find the back of the net in the season opener.
Statistical Recap
Jazmyn Brass recorded five saves in the contest on 21 shot attempts for the Grizzlies, including eight on target.
The Thunderbirds had six shot attempts in the match, with Labno and Kayleigh Acree each recording a shot on goal.Â
Labno and Brass each played 90 minutes, with Nau Yasuda logging 82. Whitney Gardner played just 33 minutes in the season opener.
