GREELEY, COLORADO -- The SUUThunderbirds left Greeley, Colorado, with a 1-1 tie after a penalty kick goal from fifth-year defender Aubrie Labno, and some more late-game heroics from senior goalkeeper Jazmyn Brass.
Head Coach Kai Edwards said
"Gritty performance on the road. Our first 10 minutes were lack luster and they were all over us. The second-half we got after it. With the result on the road this is the first result versus UNC since 2015 and first result at UNC since 2012. Good performance the last 70 minutes.
Game Recap
The Thunderbirds gave up an early goal to Lexi Tuite in the 12th minute of the game, but only gave up four shots on goal for the remainder of the match.
SUU battled to close the first half, with some quality defense and Brass pulling in two more saves as well as punching away multiple crosses, the T-Birds went into the break in a 1-0 hole.
The team came out firing in the second half. Maintaining possession in the attacking third for a majority of the first 15 minutes of action, until ultimately a ball was crossed into the box and Whitney Gardner drew a foul on Northern Colorado that led to a penalty kick for Aubrie Labno. Labno rifled a shot to the bottom right corner of the net, and despite the Bears' goalkeeper guessing correctly, she was unable to make the save. After four years at the NAIA level, this was Labno's first Division I goal.
Barely two minutes after the Thunderbirds tied the game, the Bears were given a penalty kick of their own, and Jazmyn Brass read Tuite perfectly and saved the shot with no rebound.
The teams exchanged blows for the final 25 minutes of the match, but neither team was able to break the 1-1 tie.
