Building from the Baseline: Southern Utah Grows Through Adversity

Southern Utah Volleyball is Presented by RallyStop

OGDEN, Utah - Southern Utah volleyball faced a tough test Saturday afternoon, falling in straight sets (25-8, 25-16, 25-14) to a red-hot Weber State squad. Despite the loss, the Thunderbirds showed moments of promise, especially in the third set, and will use the experience as fuel heading into the rest of the season.

Southern Utah's Offense Showing Promise

Southern Utah was led offensively by Kaitlyn Hoelker, who recorded four kills on a .154 hitting percentage, and Victoria Zibecchi, who also contributed four kills and saw the most attempts on the team. Amaya Tobias added three kills, while Kaitlyn Aleshire was highly efficient with three kills on just five swings (.600).

From the service line, the Thunderbirds tallied four aces, including two from Teniyah Leuluai, who also led the team with eight assists. Libero Amanda Mendoza anchored the defense with seven digs, helping Southern Utah stay in rallies despite a potent Weber State offense.

Strong Offense Leads the Way for Weber State

The Wildcats posted an impressive .452 team hitting percentage, led by standout hitter Ashley Gneiting, who tallied 12 kills on just 22 attempts (.455). Right behind her, Rose Moore added 10 kills and three service aces, while Saane Munyer was nearly perfect at the net with nine kills on 10 swings (.900). Setter Marly Pratt ran the offense smoothly with 30 assists, spreading the ball effectively and helping three different players reach at least nine kills.

Coach Jensen Said

"Tough result today. While the outcome wasn't what we worked for, each match gives a clearer view of where we need to improve. We'll break it down, get back to work, and continue to push forward."

Up Next

Southern Utah turns its sights to UC Riverside, marking the first game of the season in Cedar City, Utah, on September 4th at 6:30 MT. Determined to apply the lessons learned in Ogden and continue building momentum through the rest of non-conference play.
