"Everybody is 0-0-0" Thunderbirds Head Coach Kai Edwards Is Ready For Conference Play

CEDAR CITY, UTAH -- The SUU Women's Soccer team wrapped up non-conference play with a 3-2 comeback win on senior day against Portland State last time out. The T-Birds will host Utah Tech for the first match of Western Athletic Conference play this Sunday.

Head Coach Kai Edwards said

"Everybody is 0-0-0. We have been in this position before, and we earned a spot to the Conference Tournament. This was a challenging non-conference schedule, and the team is better for it."

Non-Conference Play

The T-Birds finished non-conference play at 1-5-2, on top of a big win against PSU. The Thunderbirds also had a massive result against Mountain West opponent Boise State, earning a 1-1 draw in the third match of the year.

The team scored eight goals in the non-conference, including a five-match goal streak.

Nine different players have registered a point for the Thunderbirds, and six different players have scored a goal.

Whitney Gardner leads the team with six points on two goals and two assists, while Sarah Assumma isn't far behind with five points on two goals and one assist.

Jazmyn Brass is second in the WAC with 40 saves on the year, averaging five saves per match.

Gardner and Brass also received recognition from the conference. Brass earned the WAC Goalkeeper of the Week after her outstanding performance against Boise State, and Gardner earned the WAC Offensive Player of the Week after leading the Thunderbirds to a victory against Portland State.

Conference Play

SUU opens conference play against rival Utah Tech on Sunday, September 28. The conference schedule is different this season, as every team will play each other twice.

This provides a unique opportunity for everybody, because instead of just watching film of your opponent playing against another team, teams will be able to watch film of the game the two teams participated in.

Coach Edwards is excited to start conference play because the Thunderbirds are well-equipped to play against a 1-4-4-3 formation, which is what almost all teams in the conference utilize. "We do well defending against three forwards, so I am excited to start conference play where a lot of teams play that formation, and because of non-league, we are well prepared to play against a front two," said Coach Edwards.

Whitney Gardner and Sarah Assumma are coming into form at the perfect time. Assumma has two goals in the last three matches, and Gardner had the game-tying goal and the assist on the game-winning goal against Portland State.

Aubrie Labno had to sit out the last match due to receiving a red card in the match versus NAU, and she has been a force for the Thundebirds defensively. Labno currently has the fifth most minutes played on the team, despite having to sit out.

"We typically play one really solid half per game. We just need to put two of those halves together. On Sunday, we played a full 90, and I expect the same this Sunday," said Coach Edwards. The Thunderbirds have four shutout halves so far this season.
