Matchup History

  • After splitting their matchups last season, the Thunderbirds hold a 5-4 all-time record against the Lancers. Their last two pairings have both ended as one-score games, with CBU sneaking a 69-66 win in the most recent matchup.

The Thunderbirds

Off to an impressive 3-0 start to conference play, Southern Utah now stands at an 11-4 overall record on the year. On Thursday, Jan. 8, they outpaced a strong Utah Valley team for a meaningful 76-68 win.

SUU's potent offense has excelled among their competition, leading the WAC in points-scored with 77 per game, rebounds with 43.5 per contest, and assists with 15.9 per game.

Sophomore Sierra Chambers leads the scoring effort with 15.7 points per game — second-highest in the WAC — and dishes up a team-high 3.4 assists per game. Meanwhile, juniors Ava Uhrich and Brooklyn Fely captain the commanding effort at the board, combining for an average of 18 rebounds per game. Both of them have five or more double-doubles on the season and rank in the WAC's top three rebounders.

Scouting Report

California Baptist University Lancers

California Baptist has one more conference win than the Thunderbirds at 4-0, with a 10-7 record overall. They enter their game with Southern Utah following a 75-67 win over Utah Tech. In each of their other three conference wins, they won by more than 10 points.

Rather than a top-ranking WAC offense or defense, it is a well-rounded effort on both sides of the ball that places CBU towards the top of the conference. They hold an absolutely phenomenal WAC-high scoring margin of +17.9. The Lancers also rank first in the conference in shot-blocking with 5.5 per game.

Freshman sensation Lauren Olsen averages an impressive 14.9 points per game, leading an offense with four scorers averaging more than 10 points. However, it is junior Filipa Barros who has been most impressive. Her efforts this year place her at the top of the WAC in rebounds per game, three-pointers made per game, and assist-to-turnover ratio.
