Thunderbirds Return Home for Battle with Buccaneers

CEDAR CITY, Utah -- Southern Utah returns to Cedar City to take on Park University Gilbert Buccaneers on Monday, Nov. 9 at 6:30 pm. For the Thunderbirds, the visit from Park is one last chance to fine-tune their performance on the court before embarking on a road trip that will see Southern Utah play both Washington State and Air Force.

Coach Tracy Mason said:

"I'm excited for us to get back on the court. We have some things to clean up over the next few days, but I know this group will be ready to battle on Monday."

The Thunderbirds

Southern Utah's offense has averaged 74 points during its first two outings of the season while shooting 45.2% from the field and 25% from three. Ava Uhrich leads the team in scoring with 17.5 points per game, while Brooklyn Fely and Diana Sorrondo each average 11 points per game while making more than 55% of their shots.

On defense, the Thunderbirds have been hounding opponents through two games, forcing bad shot after bad shot as they've held opponents to a field goal percentage below 30% while averaging 15.5 opponent turnovers per game. Kortney Doman followed up her strong defensive performance in the season opener with another three-steal game against New Mexico State and now has triple the season steals of second-place Denver Anderson and Amiah Lewis.

The Thunderbirds have performed well on the boards in both outings, outrebounding Redlands by 48 and going toe-to-toe with a bigger and longer New Mexico State team, nearly matching them board-for-board. Brooklyn Fely is the top board-getter with 10.5 rebounds per game while Ava Uhrich has collected 9.5 through two, including a team-best four offensive boards per game. It's not just Fely and Uhrich dominating the boards either, as seven different Southern Utah players average at least five rebounds per game through the first two outings.

The Buccaneers

Park enters Monday's matchup at 4-2 in NAIA play and 0-1 against NCAA opponents after losing to Utah Valley 85-32 last time out. The Buccaneers sport a high-octane offense, scoring 87.4 points while making nearly 10.5 three-pointers per game. On defense, Park has held opponents to 65.2 points per game and averages more than 12.5 steals.
