Southern Utah to Tip Off Three-Game Road Trip at Utah Tech

CEDAR CITY, Utah - Following a crucial win that pushed them to second in the Western Athletic Conference standings, the Southern Utah women's basketball team will look to maintain hold of their first-round bye during a showdown against their rivals from down south in St. George, Utah, on Saturday, Feb. 28. The third and final game between the two teams, which tips off at 2:00 p.m., will give the Thunderbirds an opportunity to sweep Utah Tech for the second season in a row.

Head Coach Tracy Mason said:

"Utah Tech is always a tough opponent, and we'll have to play them on the road this time. We've had a great week of practice to prepare, and I think the team understands how important this game is for us."

Matchup History

  • The Thunderbirds hold a 15-7 all-time record against the Trailblazers and have won the last four matchups with Utah Tech.
  • In their first matchup this year, Southern Utah pulled off a 12-point comeback that turned into a dominant 78-60 triumph at home. SUU outrebounded Utah Tech 56-31, and juniors Ava Uhrich and Brooklyn Fely each notched a double-double.
  • Staying in Cedar for round two, the second meeting proved much more defensive, but just as lopsided. The Thunderbirds earned a 62-49 win, and Fely recorded another double-double. Uhirch ended the afternoon with a career-high 18 rebounds.

The Thunderbirds

On a scorching hot streak in the most important stretch of the season, the 19-8 Thunderbirds have won eight of their last nine games. With a definitive 78-70 win over Abilene Christian last Saturday, they jumped to a four-game winning streak and an 11-4 WAC record that stands at second in the conference. If Southern Utah can manage to win its final three games, it will lock itself in as the one seed and the regular-season champions.

SUU's offense has been scoring at will for the past two weeks. They've averaged 79.3 points in their past four contests and haven't scored fewer than 75 points once. This year, they've totalled 15.3 assists per game and shot an incredible 43% from the field and 33.1% from the perimeter.

Despite limited height on the Southern Utah team, the Thunderbirds have been remarkable on the boards. They bring down 42.1 rebounds per game and average a massive rebounding margin of nine.

Fely and Uhrich have spearheaded this effort in the paint, averaging 8.6 and 9.9 rebounds, respectively. Each has logged nine double-doubles on the year and contributes over 12 points per game.

However, it is sophomore Sierra Chambers who has led the team in scoring for the majority of the year. She averages 15.1 points per game and, as of last Saturday, has surpassed 400 points in her 2025-2026 campaign. Chambers also chips in 3.8 assists per game.

Scouting Report

Utah Tech Trailblazers

While the 8-18 Trailblazers are off to a rocky 3-13 WAC record, they have been solid at home, holding an 8-8 record in Burns Arena. They enter their matchup following a 76-66 road loss to Abilene Christian on Thursday night.

Allowing nearly 67.2 points per game and scoring only 62.6 of their own, the Trailblazers have struggled on both sides of the ball this year. They shoot 29.3% from the three-point line and pour in a strong eight triples per game.

Although the team has struggled, individual Trailblazers have managed to find impressive success. Senior transfer Kaylee Borden has averaged an exceptional 15.5 points per game, and senior Chardonnay Hartley has continued her career as a top-tier passer with 5.2 assists per game.
