Matchup History

  • Southern Utah's 81-55 loss to the Texans on Jan. 15 proved to be a lopsided matchup, but individually, several Thunderbirds performed well. Sophomore Sierra Chambers logged a 16-point game on 62.5% shooting from the field, and junior Ava Uhrich racked up 15 boards.

The Thunderbirds

After falling to Tarleton in the midst of a three-game losing streak, SUU has flipped the switch in impressive fashion as the winners of four straight. The Thunderbirds enter this week following a tight 71-68 win over an Abilene Christian team that stands at second in the Western Athletic Conference.

It's been an incredible offense and powerful paint presence that has pushed Southern Utah to its 7-3 WAC record. Shooting 42% from the field, SUU averages 73.4 points and a hefty 42.8 rebounds per game. Their ball movement sets up this successful scoring spree, with the Thunderbirds averaging 15.2 assists per game.

Chambers boasts 3.7 of these assists per game and leads her team in scoring with an average of 15.3 points. Uhrich (13.8 PPG) and junior Brooklyn Fely (12.1 PPG) have captained the efforts underneath the boards, racking up 10 and 8.4 rebounds per game, respectively.

Scouting Report

Tarleton State University Texans

Standing at 5-6 in the conference, Tarleton State is coming off back-to-back losses: a 68-65 dogfight with ACU on the road and a 77-67 misfire against California Baptist at home.

The cornerstone of Tareton's successes has been a stout defense that gives up only 64.1 points per game. Like Southern Utah, they've been strong under the glass, notching 41.1 boards per game.

Senior Gia Adams leads Tarleton's scoring with 12.3 points per game, but a balanced attack includes three other Texans who each average 10 points. Freshman Elodie Lutbert was a force on the defense the last time TSU and SUU matched up, and she's averaged two blocks per game on the season, so expect to see her in the paint.
