Southern Utah Struggles Against UVU Defense in 74-53 Loss

OREM, Utah - The Southern Utah women's basketball team struggled with ball security in a frustrating 74-53 loss to Utah Valley University on March 5. The Thunderbirds — now removed from contention for a Western Athletic Conference regular season title — drop to 19-10 overall with an 11-6 WAC record. Meanwhile, the Wolverines rose to a 15-13 overall record and an 8-9 conference record.

Top T-Birds

  • In 39 minutes on the floor, Sophomore Kortney Doman brought down 13 boards, dished up four assists, and drained both of her triples for six points. On the defensive side, she contributed three blocks and two steals.
  • With 13 points each, sophomore Sierra Chambers and junior Morgan Trigueiro led the team in scoring. They combined for seven made threes and seven assists.
  • Junior Brooklyn Fely knocked down all four of her shots from the field in an 11-point performance.

Head Coach Tracy Mason Said:

"We made too many mistakes early in the game, and Utah Valley took advantage of that. We're all disappointed with the outcome today, but we need to shift our focus to the CBU now."

Game Recap

First Half

Sophomore Sierra Chambers dropped a triple straight out of the gate for Southern Utah, before junior Brooklyn Fely burst onto a three-basket spree. Doman cashed in on a triple with just over a minute left in the first, and the Thunderbirds earned a 16-9 lead.

UVU's swarming defense dominated the second quarter, forcing SUU to turn the ball over 12 times. Chambers managed to add another three-pointer, but the Thunderbirds fell to a 30-23 deficit at the half.

Second Half

After a stalemate for nearly four minutes, Utah Valley extended to a double-digit lead in the second half. Chambers poured in two triples and junior Morgan Trigueiro added one of her own, but Southern Utah couldn't slow the UVU offense as they battled to a 46-36 lead.

Trigueiro sank a pair of threes in the early fourth quarter, and Doman put down another as the time ticked down. However, the Wolverines were too far out of reach as they coasted to a definitive 74-53 win.
