CEDAR CITY, UTAH -- With the hiring of Steven Lindquist as the SUU Women's Soccer Head Coach, former player and current high school coach, Angie Knies, is set to join the staff as an assistant coach for the Thunderbirds.
Knies is set to join the SUU staff in the coming months and will immediately hop on the recruiting trail, looking for some quality talent to add to the Thunderbirds 2026 squad.
Head Coach Steven Lindquist said
"I am very excited for Angie to join our staff this summer. As an alumni of SUU and this program, and her recent coaching experience, she brings a unique perspective and knowledge of the team and University that will add value in a variety of ways. I look forward to getting her and her fiancé back to Cedar City and SUU!"
Knies played for the Thunderbirds for two years and developed a phenomenal relationship with Coach Lindquist. Knies played in 27 games and racked up 833 minutes.
An in-game health scare in 2024 put Knies's senior season in jeopardy, but the experienced midfielder persisted in her efforts to return to the field, starting two games by the end of the season.
"Everybody was so supportive: the staff, the school, and the trainers especially. I really appreciated that," Knies explained. "Overcoming obstacles, whether health-related or soccer-related, they were always there for me. I want to continue to do that for other people."
Outside of acting as a valuable piece of Southern Utah's team, Knies soaked up as much as she could in hopes of one day coaching a team of her own. In addition to acquiring a repertoire of training drills and practices, she reinforced her blueprint for the type of coach and person she'd be for the rest of her life.
In January 2025, Knies kicked off her coaching career by applying for and winning the head coaching role at Mount Vernon High School. With a season under her belt, she was recruited in August 2025 to join the Cornell College staff as an assistant coach.
While juggling both roles alongside a full-time job can be challenging, being part of her athletes' success makes it worth it for Knies.
Angie Knies said
"SUU is the first place I fell in love with soccer again. It gave me the best experience as a soccer player, but also meeting some of the best people in the world including mentors and friends. I'm excited to be back at SUU to coach girls who are pursuing their dreams just like I did!"
