Down to the Last Out: Toscano and Baker Reflect on SUU Careers

Southern Utah Softball is Presented by Jennifer Davis ERA Realty

CEDAR CITY, Utah — Senior seasons have a way of sharpening everything. The urgency, the perspective, the meaning behind every rep becomes clearer than ever before. For Southern Utah softball seniors Alayah Toscano and Delaney Baker, this final chapter is about who they've become and what they've built along the way.

Finding Their VoicePicture of softball players during media day

Toscano's growth hasn't just shown up in the box score, it's been just as evident in the way she carries herself.

Once a quieter presence, the Corona, California native has grown into one of the team's emotional anchors, embracing a leadership role rooted in authenticity. Her personality shines through in the way she supports her teammates and fellow student-athletes on campus.

"I've grown a lot in my leadership and my confidence," Toscano said. "Just getting comfortable with who I am, being surrounded by girls and coaches who let me be myself has really allowed me to play with joy."

That confidence has translated into a player-led culture. One Toscano has helped to shape from the inside.

"It's a player-led team, so stepping into that role, finding my voice, and feeling comfortable speaking up has been huge for me," she said.

Earning It Again

A different kind of challenge has defined Baker's journey.

After transferring into the program her sophomore season, the Farmington, Utah native had to prove herself all over again, not just to coaches and teammates, but to herself.

"When I transferred, I wasn't in the best place mentally," Baker said. "Coming here and proving to myself that I belong at the Division I level was huge."

That process wasn't easy, especially as a pitcher navigating pressure and performance.

"I had to learn how to play with the anxiety instead of trying to fight it," she said. "It's been about figuring out who I am as a player again and learning where I need to be mentally to perform my best."

Baker preps to pitchBuilt Through Adversity

If there's a common thread between the two seniors, it's resilience. Toscano has learned to embrace the grind, even when results don't come right away.

"Slumps aren't easy,  but you can't shy away from them. You just have to keep going," she said. "Maybe I'm 0-for-4, but that next at-bat is the one that matters most."

For Baker, that same mindset has been critical in the circle.

"You may not always be where you want to be, but you work out of it while still supporting your teammates," she said.

Together, they've helped define a team identity grounded in toughness and consistency.

"We've tried to build a culture where everyone gives 100% every day," Baker said. "We're not just playing for ourselves, we're playing for each other."

Setting the Standard

Leadership, for both players, has been about daily habits. Improving through consistency has been key to their growth and success in the program.

Alayah Toscano celebrates on third"Coach Don Don has a quote in her office that says 'the standard you walk past is the standard you accept," Toscano added. "This year it's been about leaving nothing unsaid, just putting everything out there, and helping the team to build a culture that gives it everything they have."

That approach has left an impression far beyond game day.

"I hope I was a culture changer. That I was impactful, not just with my words but with my actions," Toscano added. "From the weight room, to practice, to behind the scenes, I hope my work ethic motivated others."

Baker sees that same impact.

"She knows exactly when to be funny and when to be serious, and that's what this team needs," Baker said. "In one word, I'd describe her as 'Mamba', the ones who know what that means, she lives that mentality every day."

Toscano is just as quick to point back at her teammate.

"She's fiery, she's passionate, and that brings it out of me too," Toscano said. "She's always the first one to hype you up. She just always has your back."

More Than the Game

As their careers wind down, both seniors find themselves reflecting on what matters most.

For Baker, it's the people and the support system that make Southern Utah feel like home.

"The community here is amazing, our boosters know our names, professors come to games… " You just feel valued," she said. "I love representing SUU and everything the community standsBaker winding up for."

For Toscano, it's the bigger picture.

"Softball is about the lessons you learn and the people you meet," she said. "Enjoy the ride… and appreciate where your feet are."

The Final Stretch

With the end of the regular season this weekend, the perspective shifts. Every game carries a little more weight. Every moment sticks a little longer.

"I just feel a lot of gratitude," Toscano said. "I find myself looking around and trying to take in every moment because I know it could be over at any moment."

For two seniors who helped shape the standard, that appreciation feels fitting.

Their legacy will live on in stat lines and scorebooks, but more importantly, it will continue on in the culture they helped build, the toughness they modeled, and the teammates who will carry it forward.
