CEDAR CITY, Utah - The Thunderbirds Softball team posted a three-game sweep of Abilene Christain last weekend at home. Southern Utah freshman infielder McKenzy Becerra has been named the Western Athletic Conference Player of the Week following her standout performance against the Wildcats.
Head Coach Don Don Williams Said
"McKenzy had an incredible weekend and showed exactly what she's capable of when she's locked in at the plate. To hit .700 in a conference series is special, but what really stood out was her ability to come through in big moments. At the same time, that kind of success reflects the work our entire lineup is putting in to create opportunities and keep the pressure on opposing teams. She's continuing to grow every game, and we're excited about the impact she's making for our program."
Becerra was nearly unstoppable throughout the series, hitting an incredible .700 while driving in eight runs and scoring four times. She totaled seven hits on the weekend, including two doubles, three singles, and two home runs. Her biggest performance came on Friday, when she launched a grand slam and added a two-run homer, accounting for six RBIs in a single game. She also showed strong discipline at the plate, drawing two walks and consistently finding ways to get on base.
The freshman's explosive outing marked a series of career highs, including a three-hit game and a six-RBI performance, both set in the opening game against the Wildcats. Her efforts played a key role in Southern Utah's weekend sweep of ACU.
Becerra, a native of Chino Hills, California, has made an immediate impact in her first collegiate season. The Ayala High School product entered the weekend already hitting above .300 and has continued to elevate her play. On the season, she is batting .326 with 42 hits, including seven doubles, two triples, and a team-leading seven home runs, while driving in 30 runs.
Before arriving at Southern Utah, Becerra built an impressive resume at Ayala High School, where she hit over .450, earned First Team All-Palomares League honors, and helped lead her team to a league title.
With her Player of the Week honor, Becerra continues to establish herself as one of the top emerging hitters in the conference and a key piece of the Thunderbirds' lineup heading into the final weeks of the regular season.
