CEDAR CITY, UTAH -- Southern Utah athletics has built something this season that goes beyond wins and losses: a strong culture of support across programs.
Throughout the year, Thunderbirds student-athletes have consistently shown up for one another. Whether it's women's basketball, soccer, gymnastics, or other teams competing, it's been common to see fellow athletes in the stands, creating energy and a true home environment.
Softball Head Coach Don Don Williams said
"Seeing our fellow women's teams fill the stands at our games has been huge. It reminds my players they're part of something bigger than just softball, a real sisterhood on campus. That's how we build trust, lift each other up, and prove we're stronger together. Honestly, it fires us all up. Nothing beats that kind of energy.
That support has become part of the identity of SUU's programs. In a schedule filled with early practices, travel, and
competition, taking the time to support other teams isn't always easy, but it has been a priority.
Gymnastics Associate Head Coach Jamie Wysong said
"The women's teams at SUU are so special, there is a genuine love amongst the programs, athletes and coaches, and supporting each other comes naturally. I enjoy bonding with athletes from the other teams while attending the various sporting events on campus. The energy we feel is irreplaceable on the competition floor and we want every athlete to feel that same love and support for their team's hard work as well."

The impact is noticeable. Home events feel more energized, teams feed off the extra encouragement, and younger athletes see what it means to be part of something bigger than their own roster.
Interim Soccer Head Coach Steven Lindquist said
"It has been such a fun year so far seeing our women's programs rallying around each other. The relationships that our athletes are creating with each other and the support they have shown both on and off the field/court is a huge part of what makes SUU athletics such a special place. Continuing to show up for our other teams on campus only strengthens the bond our student athletes have built with each other and hopefully drives others to support all of our programs throughout the year."
It's a culture built on consistency and buy-in from both coaches and players. And while it may not show up in a box score, it has helped strengthen the department as a whole.
At Southern Utah, success this season hasn't just been about performance; it's been about showing up for each other.
Head Women's Basketball Coach Tracy Mason said
"Southern Utah University is a special place for so many reasons but one of the things that really stands out to me is the camaraderie and support amongst the athletes for one another. The teams that have come out to cheer us on change the entire atmosphere of the arena. Our athletes appreciate it and then it becomes reciprocated."
